Galaxy Z Fold 7

Review

Seven generations deep, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the most refined version of Samsung’s do-it-all foldable yet. Mixing tablet-like productivity with pocketable convenience in an overall impressive one-two punch, it's a definite redefine of what a hybrid device can accomplish – but its premium pricing and some small quirks make for some serious caveats.

The design of the Z Fold 7 is an engineering marvel. Measuring 12.1mm thin when folded with a weight of 254g, it’s surprisingly pocketable for something that unfolds to reveal an 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. The “Armor Aluminum” frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 skin is for greater protection, with IP48 rating means resistance to dust and a little dunk. Critics praise the more refined stiffness of the hinge, which makes early-model eights vibrate a bit less when their screens are folded out (while others say that as expected these new models fold with slightly greater resistance because there simply isn’t much to grab onto). When opened up, the 6.5-inch cover screen now resembles a more typical smartphone design, with a 21:9 aspect ratio that’s suited for natural typing and one-handed use — unlike its predecessor, which had very awkward proportions.

Meanwhile, both screens feature a 2,500-nit peak bright screen so daytime visibility shouldn't be an issue. The inner display’s 6:5 aspect ratio is also the balance between vertical and horizontal, perfect for both multitasking and watching videos of a cinematic quality. The panel’s 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate guarantees you buttery-smooth scrolling with better battery life. Flex Mode, a mode that splits the screen to show the image area in the upper half and something like video controls or information below it when partially folded, turns the device into a makeshift laptop for video calls or hands-free viewing.

The phone's 200MPI main sensor and Samsung ProVisual Engine capture fantastic detail in both daytime and low-light conditions. Nightography mode adds stability to elevate scenic shots without sacrificing colors, and 5x Optical Zoom nabs images with crisp-focusing subjects in the distance. Being able to shoot 8K footage at 30fps is an amazing feat for video shooters, while stabilization can fall apart during fast movements. There’s also a cover screen with a 10MP selfie camera that can shoot 4K video, as well as portrait effects for your selfies.

The 4,400mAh battery keeps going all day with moderate use, but heavy multitasking or gaming will require a top-up around the middle of the day. 25W wired charging might not be fastest compared OnePlus, but the phone gets to around 50% in 30 minutes. Wireless charging and PowerShare (reverse wireless charging) are useful additions, but the lack of faster 45W charging is felt.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a folding masterpiece that brings foldable technology to life every day with unrivaled versatility for work and play, from the office of the future to pro camera equipment in your pocket. Those limitations are outshone, however, by its sharp design, colorful screen and potent software, despite some small issues like an underwhelming battery life and a cost that's just too high at $1,999. But, if affordability or a small footprint are top-of-mind for you, you might be able to find some value among traditional flagships. For anyone willing to pay up, the Z Fold 7 is more than a phone — it’s a mobile workspace, movie theater and creative studio in one.

If you hunger for the future of mobile tech and have a wallet full of cash, do consider the Z Fold 7. Just be gentle with it — this is not the device for the clumsy.
