The LG G8 ThinQ was launched at MWC 2019 and it was the South Korean company’s last real compact flagship before it started looking for funkier features. The 151.9 x 71.8 x 8.4mm frame is crammed with tech, the 6.1-inch Crystal Sound OLED panel vibrating its entire surface to all at once serve as screen and earpiece, pumping out 3120 x 1440 pixels (19.5:9) behind Gorilla Glass 5 curved sides. Beneath the cover glass which houses a nifty in-display fingerprint sensor with an OLED FHD+ display is Qualcomm’s 7nm Snapdragon 855 processor that’s mated to 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB storage, expandable to up to 1TB using a hybrid microSD tray.
The 3,500 mAh cell, which can be Quick or Qi-charged is small but powerful. LG includes a QC3.0 adapter but, while it subscribes to the audiophile lineage, it also retains the 3.5mm headphone jack with a 32-bit Quad DAC and DTS:X 3D surround. The dual rear setup consists of a 12MP f/1.5 regular lens with 1.4µm pixels, dual-pixel PDAF and OIS next to a 16MP f/1.9 107° ultra wide; they both shoot 4K/60fps video with HDR10. An 8 MP selfie camera on the front and a Z Camera sensor for Hand ID vein-pattern unlock and Air Motion mid-air gestures accompany it.
Security extras include a rear capacitive fingerprint reader; face unlock and LG's "Knock Code". It is water and dust resistant with an IP68 rating and can take some knocks with its drop rated MIL-STD-810G. Connectivity includes LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, NFC, and LG Pay MST. It’s running Android 9 Pie with LG UX 8.0, has Android 11 support; and, by that I mean, day by day, LG could say “we’re going to do become better to meet the customers’ standards.”
