iPhone 18 Pro Max

Review

Rather than just a bigger phone, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is best considered as a big-screen productivity and entertainment device. It is difficult to operate with one hand due to its height of 163.4mm, and weighs 249 grams. The aluminum chassis looks high-end but remains basic in terms of design, making it pretty hard to separate from the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The smaller Dynamic Island is a decent addition to the user interface, showing up to three Live Activities at a time, but overall it doesn't alter the look of the phone itself.

The OLED display still proves to be a highlight. It delivers accurate text with minimum lags and high refresh rates up to 120Hz for smooth scrolling and fluid gaming experience at 460 ppi. It allows easier viewing of videos and maps in outdoor environments due to anti-reflective treatment, which eliminates distracting reflections. The large screen is perfect for sorting clips, inspecting photos, and reading documents. The 6.9-inch display, however, isn't as flexible as a tablet and the relatively broad body may not fit smaller hands or pockets well.

Performance is courtesy of the A20 Pro, which is also on the smaller iPhone 18 Pro. According to Apple, the processor and graphics improvements are significant compared with the A19 Pro, while the improved architecture of the vapor chamber helps to preserve performance in the face of intensive game rendering, AI computing, and gaming. Demanding applications are more benefited than the regular messaging or browsing in practical terms. The phone boasts iOS 27 with newer Apple Intelligence functions and a more advanced Siri. Some functionality is still in beta and others are language and region dependent, and Apple's AI ecosystem has a few drawbacks when used with third party services.

The most impactful creative upgrade is the addition of camera equipment. Its main sensor has a variable aperture, which varies from f/1.48 to f/4. This aids in light management in low-light scenes and offers a greater amount of control over depth of field, though sensors size and software processing affect the quality of the final image. The 48MP ultra-wide lens is great for landscape and close-up shots, and the 48MP telephoto lens is capable of 4x optical zoom and 8x optical-quality framing. They include a range of settings for different kinds of shots, but those who want a longer optical reach would want better power in their dedicated telephoto options. The 18MP Center Stage camera comes in handy for video calls and group selfies.

US pricing starts at $1,299 for the 256GB variant and peaks at 2TB. The entry price is $100 higher than the previous Pro Max entry price. In conclusion, this device is ideal for those who value durability, screen size, and multipurpose cameras. For iPhone 17 Pro Max users, the update may be a gradual step-up unless it tackles particular requirements, especially in the area of battery and variable aperture.
