Xiaomi 17

Review

Competing in the crowded field of smartphones in 2025, the Xiaomi 17 looks to be one of those rare devices that balances futuristic tech with an ergonomics oriented form factor. Selling for ¥4,499 for the top-end 12+256GB configuration, it squares up to some of the biggest premium flagships around, satisfyingly flashy hardware choices and user-friendly features like Pro mode included.

The Xiaomi 17 is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Ultimate Edition chip with a fifth generation architecture (based on TSMC's 3nm/2nm process) and offers superfast performance. It's good for demanding activities, from high-refresh-rate gaming to 4K video editing, with an AnTuTu benchmark score north of 4 million. In a 60-minute game session at highest-quality settings, the device sustained a consistent 60fps and held temperatures below 42°C with the 6580mm² vapor chamber cooling system. 100W wired fast-charge (19 minutes to 100%), battery life that easily lasts all day even for power users despite the relatively small (for a flagship) 7000mAh cell.

A 6.3-inch 2K+ AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate pushes the boundaries for small screen devices. 3500-nit peak brightness allows to easily read the screen in direct sunlight, with the M10 luminous material – a homegrown invention that outperforms international opponents – ensuring power is used efficiently. Color accuracy is enhanced by P3 wide color support and adaptive TrueColor 3.0 technology that adjusts the white balance based on ambient light so you can share your laptop screen or video image with up to six people in Face-to-Face mode. Gamers will benefit from the 2160Hz high frequency PWM dimming, helping to alleviate eye fatigue during extended use.

This Xiaomi-Leica collaboration shows in the camera setup: you get a main 50MP sensor, paired with a wide 50MP floating telephoto lens and another 50MP ultra-wide shooter. Night shooting ability is back up to 70% increase in light intake capturing delicate details with fuzzy less color cast. Anyone who makes videos will love the AI-based editing tools, like 3-second backlight correction or real-time object removal, though iPhone 17's Dolby Vision 8K recording is still probably the industry king when it comes to stability.

The device is powered by Xiaomi's Pengpai OS 3, making it a versatile device with features such as a “Flexible Island” notification centre and out of the box connectivity to various ecosystems from Xiaomi — even more so with cars and smart home devices on their line-up. Versus the closed world of iOS, more personalization is possible on Pengpai OS with a little lost polish for some gained flexibility.

The Xiaomi 17 finds that sweet spot between performance, size and budget. Where the iPhone 17 is stronger include video stability, and integration into an ecosystem. However, Xiaomi also takes home raw specs and battery life—at a better price ¥1,500-4,000 cheaper for equivalent storage. For those who are fans of small-screen devices, or photographers or gamers who simply won't settle for mediocrity in the gaming and photography departments, Xiaomi 17 show us compact flagship can still get the last laugh.
