The OPPO Find N5 feels like a giant step forward because above all else, it feels weirdly regular. Known as the world's thinnest book-style foldable device with a thickness of when closed and an incredible thinness, this phone could very well banish the chunky profile that has been associated with foldable devices from day one.
What really makes the Find N5 stand out is how effortlessly it switches between both of its displays. The 6.62-inch cover screen feels perfectly natural to use, with dimensions scarcely thinner than your typical flagship phone. Unfolded, its 8.12-inch internal screen gives you ample canvas for multimedia and productivity, with the slimmest crease of any foldable device I've tested so far. The hinge is made out of a titanium alloy and feels polished and secure both when opening or closing the device.
And performance is great, too—it’s not such a slouch in the processing department (Snapdragon 8 Elite to blame there) and handles everything from casual shooting-the-breeze to intense gaming without breaking a sweat. And then there's the 5,600mAh battery, which actually lasted all day of heavy usage (that is certainly not a slim phone either). It's a fast charger with 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
The camera system, developed in partnership with Hasselblad, is fine overall but not amazing. In good light, crisp, bright images are pulled in by the 50MP main sensor and 50MP telephoto lens. The OPPO Find N5 is capable of taking great daily photos as well. The 8MP ultra wide camera, however, feels like a bit of a letdown with images that aren't as impressive and especially so in low-light conditions. The telephoto is also used as a macro camera, providing a sweet perspective for close-up photography.
The foldable experience is greatly improved by software features. Excellent multitasking, of up to three apps at a time in the inner display. One cool new feature is ‘O Plus Connect’, which will allow cross-platform file sharing with Apple devices, and includes the ability to operate a Mac computer remotely; a potentially powerful tool if you’re working in certain workflows.
The main limitation is accessibility. The Find N5 isn’t going to be sold in the US so far that much is confirmed by OPPO, but also not in Europe either which slightly moderates its global scope. You might also discover the camera system is not quite as impressive photographically as that on more traditional flagship phones, at least in some circumstances.
Ultimately, the OPPO Find N5 works because it takes a technology that feels so wacky and makes it seem perfectly normal. It doesn't have the compromises you've previously had to make around how thick it is or how visible its crease, but does it work well and last all day? For those in markets where it is available, it’s one of the best reasons to take the plunge on a foldable device yet. The phone shows the most advanced tech available now in the market, and if you buy it, you can enjoy this tech.
