Review

iPhone 15 Pro Max runs on Apple’s A17 Pro chip. It’s built using a 3nm tech. This big step up means much better CPU and GPU power than the A16 Bionic in the iPhone 14 Pro Max. With a six-core GPU, hardware acceleration for ray tracing makes lighting and shadowing effects in games and apps look as real as in real life which was not possible on phones before. Thanks to this, iPhone 15 Pro Max stands out as a gaming and work tool, offering up to 20% better maximum graphics performance. In terms of everyday experience, this will mean better task managing, quicker app responses and better performance for tasks such as video editing and 3D modeling.

The Super Retina XDR OLED display is impressive yet again with a 2796-by-1290 resolution and 460 ppi for sharpness. ProMotion ensures the screen stays smooth by adjusting the refresh rate automatically between 10 and 120Hz and the high 2000 nit peak brightness helps you easily see the screen outdoors. HDR10 video playback has decent brightness but slightly compromised contrast in midtones compared to the previous generation.

While the main 48MP sensor is the same size as that of iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple has improved the image processing pipeline with the latest Photonic Engine and HDR enhancements. The base resolution of the photo is now 24MP, achieved via pixel binning, with a nice trade-off between detail and noise suppression. Thanks to a periscope-style telephoto lens, the phone can now zoom in five times more than it could before, with optical zoom. The tetraprism design within this lens allows light to be folded, helping to give the optics longer reach without making the phone thicker. This yields sharper, more detailed zoomed images with higher color accuracy and less noise, especially at 5x and even 10x digital zoom settings.

The ultra-wide-angle lens is hardware-identical but benefits from improved night mode treatment and image processing, resulting in greater detail and dynamic range in low-light conditions. Autofocus on the front camera provides crisper self-portraits and video call photos. Video capabilities are the best of the best, too, with strong stabilization, good exposure, and natural skin tone reproduction making iPhone 15 Pro Max arguably the greatest smartphone camera for video available.

Battery life is excellent, with the phone lasting over 69 hours on typical usage conditions and being among the top in the smartphone class. The A17 Pro chip’s power efficiency is a prime factor for this battery life. Yet charging speed remains disappointing; iPhone 15 Pro Max supports up to 27W wired charging, which is slower than most flagship models. It takes longer than two hours to charge using the included charger, although the 30-minute quick charge boost delivers only about four hours of usage. Wireless charging efficiency is comparable to previous designs, and the phone supports MagSafe accessories. USB-C integration is a positive integration, offering faster data transfer up to 10Gb/s using compatible cables.

The titanium frame is a standout, reducing its weight with improved structural resilience and scratch resistance. The material selection places iPhone 15 Pro Max ahead of its stainless steel-based counterparts in terms of weight and ease of grip at its increased size. Adding the customizable Action Button as a replacement for the mute switch provides end-users with a programmable physical input that can be utilized for anything, improving usability.

While it has many positives, iPhone 15 Pro Max is not without negatives. The charging speed is slower than what some Android devices have for both wired and wireless charging. Although the 5x zoom on an iPhone is great, it trails behind the 10x or higher zoom abilities on many Android high-end phones. Also, the subtle orange tinge in display color accuracy may be a problem with customers who care for flawless color fidelity.
