Sony Xperia 1 VI

Review

Sony Xperia 1 VI has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powering its heart, approximately 25% faster in CPU and GPU performance compared to its predecessor, Sony Xperia 1 V. This rise in processing power will give smoothness in multitasking and improved gaming. Without the option of 12GB of RAM, options for 256GB or 512GB of storage are available, and even more-so up to 1.5TB using microSD; it means users can expect robust performance regardless of how demanding their applications may be.

Although the drop from a 4K display to FHD+ may seem like a step backward, one has to look at the advantages that such a change has brought about. Lower pixel density does mean that battery efficiency has improved with the new display configuration, yet it retains all the other positive attributes of an OLED display in terms of colors and contrast. The variable refresh rate helps not only to make gaming more responsive but also is a great power saver when less demanding activities are performed.

The camera system is one of the major selling points of Sony Xperia 1 VI. It retains a 48MP Exmor T sensor for its main camera but introduces AI enhancements that improve image processing capabilities significantly. The telephoto lens now offers stepless optical zoom, which facilitates smooth transitions between different focal lengths without sacrificing image quality—a feature that many competitors struggle to replicate.

In practical terms, users found that photos taken with Sony Xperia 1 VI looked more natural and had nice details, especially in the case of good lighting conditions. In low-light conditions, it still has some challenges since noise may be a minus in image quality. Further, ghosting effects occur during HDR shots when the objects are moving.

Another area where Sony Xperia 1 VI truly shines is in battery life. Fitted with a 5,000mAh battery, Sony boasts that users will be able to get as many as two days of use from a single charge thanks to its power-sipping display technology and optimized software performance. Real-world tests have indeed seen some pretty great endurance: an average of around 17 hours of active use time across various tasks from web browsing to video playback.

The speeds remain the same as previously: 30W wired and 15W wireless are still not class-leading but good enough for the majority of users’ needs.

Audio remains one of the strong suits of Sony, and Sony Xperia 1 VI has front-firing stereo speakers, retaining the highly valued 3.5mm headphone jack, quite a rarity on modern flagship devices. Reviews have said that it can deliver rich and well-balanced audio, perfect for media consumption.

The design of Sony Xperia 1 VI is both a continuation and a departure from Sony’s flagship line. Going back to a more normal aspect ratio of 19.5:9 brings it more in line with other mainline flagships like Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra but retains its distinct, uniquely textured glass backside and ribbed aluminum framing. However, some will doubtless miss the more pronounced difference that came from working with taller screens engineered, conceptually at least, to provide a genuinely cinematic experience.

All in all, Sony Xperia 1 VI is quite an interesting flagship phone that manages to balance advanced technology with user-oriented design approaches. While not everyone might like it because of the price tag or some design aspects, for those who take audio-visual seriously, there is a lot to love about this device.
