OnePlus 13R

Review

OnePlus 13R is a striking entry to the crowded mid-range phone market, packing impressive performance inside a stylish look for less than other high-end rivals. Billed as a follow-up to the popular OnePlus Nord line, this device is aimed at people who want high-end specs without the high cost. What that rounds out to, after some weeks spent using the phone, is that OnePlus' priorities are right: Speed, display quality and software polish — but a few frustrating sacrifices mean it doesn't quite hit greatness.

On the surface, the 13R design reads as distinctly premium. Its glass back comes in matte finishes such as Midnight Black and Ceramic White, and doesn't pick up fingerprints while staying securely in your hand. It features a durable aluminum frame, but still manages to remain lightweight, weighing just 195g, while the 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED display is the standout attraction – you're getting a 1.5K resolution (2780 x 1264 pixels) and a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Colors are vibrant and HDR10+ support means impressive contrasts during movie streams. A flat screen, which is a sigh of relief to some, means fewer accidental touches and increased durability.

And the 13R really excels in performance. With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and as much as 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM powering it on, it deals with multitasking, gaming, and demanding apps with no trouble at all. With titles like PUBG Mobile running at high settings free of stutter, and a vapor chamber cooling system to reign in thermals during long sessions of play. On the software side of things, you get a 5500mAh battery that will provide you with all-day battery life. And when it's time to re-juice, the 100W SUPERVOOC charger refuels the phone from 0% to 100% in only 25 minutes — a game-changing speed for those on the go.

The camera system is competent, but not of the same caliber as the the phone's performance prowess. It has a triple-lens arrangement that includes 50MP main sensor (Sony IMX890, OIS), an 8MP ultra-wide lens and 2MP macro shooter, taking detailed pictures under good light. But low light performance can be hit and miss, adding noise to images if not flicked into HDR mode yourself. The 16MP front camera captures razor-sharp selfies as well but it's bad with dynamic range under harsh backlight. Software features including Nightscape and AI scene optimization help, though not enough to bring them up to snuff with inviting competitors, such as Google's Pixel 3a.

OxygenOS 14, built on Android 14, continues to be one of the cleanest, most customizable skins around. Almost-stock Android look with some handy additions such as Zen Mode, a little configurable RAM Boost, and excellent support for OnePlus accessories. The taptic engine imparts satisfying feedback, and stereo speakers (tuned by Dolby Atmos) provide immersive audio for movies and music.

OnePlus 13R is a mid-range masterclass, in short, and punches well above its weight. A blazing fast processor, beautiful screen and superfast charging also make it one of the best options for power users, but camera enthusiasts should look elsewhere. For those looking for a flagship experience on the cheap, this phone is good.
