Review

Huawei Mate 50 Pro features a customized Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, topped at 4G LTE. But the 8-core CPU with a 3.2 GHz top clock speed delivers buttery performance in daily life, gaming, and multi-tasking. Eight gigabytes of RAM ensure hassle-free app management, while 256GB or 512GB storage with expandability through Nano memory offers ample space. HarmonyOS 3.0 is pre-installed, offering a seamless experience and tight ecosystem integration, but no Google Play Services will be a concern of app availability internationally.

6.74-inch OLED is a 120Hz, 1228×2700 pixel, Full HD+ display that offers vivid, sharp images with rich blacks and good color accuracy. It’s supported by HDR10+ and 10-bit depth, and is capable of producing more than 1 billion colors. It’s protected from scratches and drops with Huawei Kunlun glass. Rounded sides are included in a thin, streamlined design. It does not feature LTPO technology, so the refresh rate will never automatically decrease below 60Hz in an effort to save the battery.

Among the highlights is the XMAGE camera system, which is headed by a 50MP main camera with a variable (f/1.4 to f/4.0) lens to enable improved low-light photography and control of depth of field. In-camera optical blur stabilization is supported. A 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera enhances macro shots, and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens comes with 3.5x optical and 100x digital zooms in macro shots of distant objects. AI optimization comes in handy in boosting processing of the images, colors, and details. A 13MP front-facing camera is capable of wide-angle self-portraits and 3D face recognition.

Its 4,700mAh battery provides reliable daylong power, offering over eight hours of real-world screen-on time. It supports fast charging with 66W wired charging that refills the phone from zero to full in approximately 42 minutes, and 50W wireless charging to save time. Reverse wireless charging at 7W is used to power secondary devices. Huawei makes sure your battery is not overcharged with Smart Charge technology.

With a weight of 209 grams, the phone is 162.1 x 75.5 x 8.5 mm and offers a curved glass design and certification against water and dust. Huawei claims that the phone can stay underwater up to 6 meters which is more than what an IP68 rating usually allows for. Biometric security is handled by an under-display fingerprint reader and fast and precise 3D facial recognition.

Huawei Mate 50 Pro isn’t without weaknesses. First and foremost, it lacks 5G connectivity, a major limitation in 2025 where much of the competition carries newer network tech potentially affecting future-proofing. The screen, wonderful as it is, lacks LTPO tech, which would enable adaptive refresh rates to help further preserve the life of the battery. Finally, the relatively sizable front camera cutout might be a slight physical quirk in some people’s books.

Upgrading from Huawei Mate 40 Pro, Huawei Mate 50 Pro brings a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (4G) chipset upgrade, raises the telephoto from 13MP to a 64MP periscope camera, and adds satellite messaging. Screen and battery remain the same but with incremental improvements. It is ahead of the rest of the flagships in terms of camera flexibility and special satellite communication but behind in network technology with no 5G.
