Introduction

The Sony Xperia 5 III is the compact top of the range smartphone, packing pretty much all the flagship power of its rivals into something that's a little easier to handle. Launched late last year, the 6.1-inch 21:9 HDR OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling from Xperia 1 III that promises stunning visuals for gaming and entertainment. Under the hood, it includes the Snapdragon 888, with8G of RAM and 256G of local storage, it will have fast app opening and multitasking.

It has the triple-camera system, developed in partnership with Sony's Alpha camera engineers, that you will find yourself most impressed with. It's armed with a 12MP main sensor (f/1.7), a 12MP ultra-wide (f/2.2) and a variable telephoto lens (that switches between 70mm, 105mm, f/2.3-2.8) including real-time tracking for savoury photography. The phone also offer the 4K HDR video recording at 120fps, that will surely attract videography lovers.

Battery life is the under-the-radar star. Although compared to today's 5 000 mAh leviathans, the cells may sound small, adaptive refresh and Sony's battery care algorithms on board, the net result was consistently around six hours screen on time. On paper the 30-watt charger feels like a relic, but the phone recovered 50 percent in 30 minutes, and the bundled USB-C to 3.5mm dongle served as a reminder that membership in the Cult of the Wire means losing all privileges of pretended superiority the best LDAC codec in the world cannot imitate. With the powerful hardware, the Xperia 5 III remains light (168g) and slim (8.2mm), being one of the few compact flagships remaining. It still offers 3.5mm headphone jack and IP68 water resistance, focusing to both audiophiles and outdoor users.

As a whole, the Xperia 5 III is a little bit of a go-getter for those looking for portability, multimedia and camera phone versatility, but its thermal throttling and aging chipset will turn other power users away.
